Interstate 64I-64 connects St. Louis, Missouri and Indiana through the southern part of Illinois. Except for the St. Louis area, it avoids any large cities in Illinois. Mt. Vernon is the only other city of any size in Illinois that is passes through. Nonetheless, the section from St. Louis to Mt. Vernon carries a decent volume of traffic while the stretch east of I-57 is lightly travelled. Obviously, in the St. Louis area, the highway is very busy and was recently widened.I-64 originally was supposed to follow the general path of US 50 from St. Louis to Vincennes, Indiana, but the route was modified before all but a short section on both sides of the the Indiana-Illinois border was built. The majority of I-64 in Illinois was built in the mid to late 1970s after the initial rush of the 1960s and early 1970s. I-64 connects St. Louis to Norfolk, Virginia via Evansville, Louisville, Lexington, Charleston, WV, and Richmond, VA. |
