Illinois Highway Ends

I-55

Interstate 55 I-55 begins in Chicago at Lake Shore Drive (US 41) and ends at the Mississippi River by St. Louis, Missouri. It passes through four major metropolitan areas in Illinois and closely follows the route of historic US 66. In fact because much of US 66 was divided, I-55 was one of the later first generation Interstates completed in Illinois. Portions in and around St. Louis, Chicago, Springfield, and Bloomington were completed by the mid-1960s, however. In Chicago, I-55 is known at the Adlai Stevenson Expressway (or "the Stevenson") where it services the fast-growing southwest suburbs. The entire length in Illinois is quite heavily used - much more so than I-57 and I-39, and significant portions are six lanes. I-55 connects Illinois with St. Louis, Memphis, Jackson, Mississippi, and New Orleans connecting the upper Midwest to the South.
