Illinois State Route 53Illinois 53 goes from Long Grove south th Gardner, about 20 miles southwest of Joliet. It is a major north-south route in the western suburbs of Chicago, but is somewhat being relegated to secondary status south of I-290 as I-355 is built. To the north, an extension north into Lake County has been awaited for decades, but if it will ever be built remains to be seen. Because of this situation, the route 53 freeway does not make it to Lake-Cook Road - rather Illinois 53 exits at Rand Road (US 12), and the future Illinois 53 freeway north remains unsigned north of there. Route 53 ends well south of Joliet in the town of Gardner. Illinois 53 originally turned east in Lockport following 159th Street and ended at Torrence Avenue near the Indiana line. |
