Illinois State Route 1Illinois route 1 runs south from the south side of Chicago all the way down to Cave in Rock on the Ohio River across from Kentucky. It is close to Indiana and Kentucky for the entire length. At the south end, a free car ferry connects it to Kentucky 91. Although the route is long, it is not too major because it largely avoids the major cities and runs parallel and close to US 41 in Indiana.The Illinois 1 routing has undergone some changes since its inception. The most major is movement from the Metropolis-Vienna-Harrisburg-Carmi routing to the current one that stays close to the Wabash and Ohio Rivers in southern Illinois. |
