Interstate 94I-94 runs along the Lake Michigan Lakeshore on its way to Chicago, and is cosigned with I-80 and US 6 for the westernmost fifteen miles of its routing into Illinois. The entire length of I-94 is a free route unlike I-90. Thus, it has a higher volume of traffic than it might otherwise. I-94 has at least six lanes the entire way in Indiana. The final section around Michigan City (the missing link) was completed in the early 1970s. The part of I-94 in Lake County is known as the Frank J. Borman Expressway (renamed from Tri-State Expressway in 1969). The Borman is an extremely busy highway with a high porportion of trucks. The Borman has been rebuilt to 8 through lanes from the Illinois line to I-65. Until the mid-1960s, I-94 was routed on the Indiana Toll Road, but the routes of I-90 and I-94 were swapped then.I-94 connects Billings, Montana with Port Huron, Michigan via Minneapolis/St. Paul, Madison, Milwaukee, Chicago, and Detroit. |
