US 231US 231 goes from near Owensboro, Kentucky north to the Chicago suburban portion of Nortwest Indiana. While one of the the original US routes, US 231 is actually comparatively new in Indiana, having been extended into Indiana in 1954. The section north of Lafayette runs over the independent portion of historic US 152. The part north of Lafayette zig-zags mainly following what was SR 53. This part crosses I-65 several times as it jogs northwestward.US 231 is the longest highway in Indiana at 297 miles, but will eventually be surpassed by I-69 when it is completed. Two portions of US 231 are planned for widening in the next few years. They are the Lafayette-West Lafayette and Jasper-Huntingburg bypasses. South of I-64, US 231 is now an expressway that mainly follows a new terrain routing. It crosses the Ohio River just northeast of Owensboro, Kentucky. South of Lafayette, US 231 is the primary north-south route between I-65 and US 41. It remains the primary highway link to the large Crane NWSC until I-69 is built. |
