Indiana Highway Ends

US 131 US 131 has always been a parenthetical road in Indiana, when it has been in Indiana. In the fifties (and maybe before) it actually extended into Bristol, but in 1960 it was cut back to White Pigeon, Michigan. In 1980, it was finally extended to its present terminus at the Indiana Toll Road. It seems the intent was for US 131 to run to Elkhart (late 1920's Clawson maps showed this connection as a reality; other maps from that era show the route without the US designation), and from there to possibly (re)connect with US 31 either in South Bend or further south via Indiana 25 (Rochester) or Indiana 19 (Peru). My guess is that Indiana never went for US 131 because they felt it wasn't worth adding onto their roster of routes. US 112 went from Elkhart to Detroit and was thus worth trying to hold onto; I don't think they felt the same way about a connection to Traverse City (especially with the US route system expanding throughout the 1930's).
