US 41In Indiana, US 41 runs down the west side of the state from the very northwest corner of Indiana in Hammond south to Kentucky south of Evansville. The majority of US 41 is four lanes and divided in the state - the only section that is not wide is where SR 63 takes over as the major north south road in west central Indiana. There are two parts that are freeway: where it multiplexes on the Borman Expy. for a mile and the section around Vincennes. The latter part was upgraded because this was the intended routing for I-64 in the early 1960s. The area around Princeton is a true expressway as US 41 goes by a large Toyota truck assembly plant.US 41 was one of the original "major" US routes that was created in 1926. At one time, the intersection of US 41 and US 30 was called "The Crossroads of America", but with the advent of the Interstate system, a significant amount of the intercity traffic has been diverted to I-65. Nonetheless the part from Terre Haute south through Evansville is a heavily travelled route. |
