US 33US 33 goes generally northwest-southeast in its trip through Indiana, although its numbering is of a north-south route. In all other states, US 33 is marked as an east-west route. It connects the Michiana and Fort Wayne areas in Indiana so it can be considered a major route, but it is generally a two lane road.Originally US 33 ran through to St. Joseph, Michigan (and even a bit beyond), following the Lincoln Highway routing from Elkhart to South Bend, then cosigned with US 31 into Michigan. As US 20 and US 31 were reassigned on divided, limited access highways US 33 stayed on its original routing, then in 1998 it was truncated from the Niles, Michigan terminus to Dunlap, Indiana, just south of Elkhart. US 33 took over all or part of the routes of SR 2 and SR 527 when it came into existence in 1935. |
