US 20US 20 runs across the top of the state, and is roughly paralleled by the Indiana Toll Road. It passes through two major metropolitan areas: Gary/Hammond and South Bend/Elkhart. While it now bypasses South Bend and Elkhart, it still follows close to its original routing in northwest Indiana following urban surface streets.When the US system was first planned, US 20 was cosigned with US 12 from Michigan City all the way into Chicago (outside of a stretch from east Gary into East Chicago). In the early thirties, the present alignment for US 20 was built from southwest of Michigan City to just east of Gary. US 20 goes from Newport, Oregon to Boston, Massachusetts passing through 12 states. |
