State Road 1

State Road 1 is a discontinuous route consisting of two sections. SR 1 is an original state highway that has gone through a few changes in the history. Since the early 1990s, SR 1 has consisted of two discontiguous sections because of the decommissioning of the stretch around Fort Wayne.

SR 1 runs down the east end of the state for a total of over 180 miles. In the north, it begins south of the Michigan line at US 20 and ends just north of Fort Wayne. It originally ended at SR 120 on the north, but that stretch was decommissioned in the 1940s.

The south section currently begins just south of Fort Wayne at I-469 and ends at US 50 in Lawrenceburg near I-275 and the Ohio River. The original southern end point was at US 50 where SR 101 currently ends. Along the way a stretch in the middle was decommissioned, and SR 1 was briefly in the 1940s a road that consisted of two sections. Later in the 1940s, the southern section of SR 1 became a section of SR 101, and SR 1 took over the northern (eastern) few miles of SR 56.
